While the sports world is dealing with Tiger's "Accident", AI's "retirement", and the end of Charlie Weis' "tenure", the Boston Celtics have quietly been on a bit of a hot-streak. With Sunday's 92-85 win over the Heat, the Celtics have been on a bit of a tear, winning 4 straight to improve their record to 13-4, one-half game behind Orlando for the top seed in the East. However, with the way the Celtics have started off their seasons lately (including 27-3 last season), no one really seems to be taking notice. Even as the most avid Celtics fan in the state of Arizona, I've even been less than inspired at times to watch them this season. Why you ask? For me it's simple - I have had a bad feeling about this team since training camp. While it is not the most popular stance to take, it's the stance I am taking. Maybe it's the "sort-of-the-same-thing" idea that this team and the team the Lakers put together with Karl Malone and Gary Payton (a super fantasy basketball squad, but not a real-life championship squad) are all too similar. Yes, the Lakers made the Finals, but promptly got punked out of them by the Pistons and their stout defense. Which brings me to this - maybe it's the fact that I am less than impressed with the Celtics' defense over the past 3 or so weeks. If the Celtics are to do anything this season, it begins and ends on the defensive end of the floor. And right now, I'm just not seeing it. The top of the food chain is much more populated than it was two years ago, and they're a far cry from what they were in 2008. And they need to be at least that good in 2010 for a shot at #18. For a team that preached being the best defensive team in NBA history during training camp, I expect more. The season is only 20% gone (or, for the optimists, 80% to go), their defense must improve for them to realistically be considered a contender for a 'chip. While they still lead the league in point differential (+8.6), and are 3rd in points against (91.3), giving up 113 points to Indiana, and 110 to Philly isn't going to bode well come May. I'm sure the team is well aware of this. And if Sunday's showing against the Heat is any indication, they've already taken a step forward.

A truly pitiful display by the Celtics. It was a game where the Celtics looked more like a circus act rather than an NBA team. A combo of stone hands, dismal rebounding, and poor offensive execution never bode well, but adding bad officiating to the equation is like drinking gasoline and pissing on a brush fire. And the Celtics had plenty of bad calls and non-calls. While we're on that subject, is Paul Pierce EVER going to get any sort of respect by any officiating crew? Tonight was sort of like the epitome of Paul's career. He is to the NBA what Rodney Dangerfield was to the entertainment world. Anyway, the officiating sucked, and the Celtics lacked any sort of desire, fire or passion for most of the game, getting routinely killed on the glass and to loose balls. And while I love KG, he is clearly not even close to 100%. It's only 10 games in, but I am already getting sick and tired of watching him get beat and out-worked for rebounds. Maybe I'm completely wrong on this, but it sure looks like he has ZERO elevation, or he's scared to leap.
Regardless, it's one in the L-column, and I'm actually not all that pissed off about it. NBA officiating is, at best, a joke on a good day. Tonight was no different. As I say in almost every write-up - the Celtics were 27-2 at one point last season. What does that mean now? Exactly. What did we learn? - The Celtics don't always have that "switch" that they can turn on to take over a game and put another team away - NBA officials suck - When Rondo isn't aggressive offensively, the entire offense stalls - I still want to punch Mike Bibby in the face every time I see him - The Celtics had better learn to rebound the friggin ball, or it's going to be another short playoff run - NBA officials suck - Rondo has the ability to take it to the hoop on any given play - Rondo has the ability to miss every jump shot and free-throw that he takes in any given game - Paul Pierce will never get any respect from the officials. Every year we think it'll happen, and every year, we get boned - Marquis Daniels still reminds me of Mikki Moore (no , that's not a good thing) - I still hate ESPN - Hubie Brown needs to come up for air every now and then - NBA officials suck -I am astounded that ESPN didn't work in a LeBron angle at some point during the game The Box Score | Player | Mins | FGM/A | 3FM/A | FTM/A | OREB | DREB | T-REB | AST | PF | STL | TO | BS | BA | PTS |

The Celtics and Rajon Rondo are about 10 million dollars apart on a new extension, per Gary Tanguay on CSN. According to Tanguay, the Celtics are offering a 5-year deal at 9M per, while Rondo is looking for 11M per. For what it's worth, Tanguay says that he's hearing that an extension will NOT get done by Monday.

Glen Davis (I am reserving the right to not call him "Big Baby" for the foreseeable future) will NOT be suspended by the team, but will face a fine: Danny Ainge and Glen Davis met with the media before the game to announce that Big Baby has been fined for the incident which left him with a broken thumb. However, despite previous reports, Davis will not be suspended.
“We have decided as an organization not to suspend Glen," Ainge said. "We’ve levied a fine against him. We want him around the team, we want him with the team on the road. We want him conditioning with the team and continuing to learn everything we’re doing. This was an unfortunate incident. Glen has apologized to owners, his teammates, coaches, fans and everybody, and it’s time to move forward.”
The timetable for Davis' return to action remains at 6-8 weeks.

There were no overtimes needed tonight. The Celtics came out in the 2nd half and put on an offensive and defensive clinic that turned a 15-point halftime lead into a 27 point 3rd quarter lead. The result? A 118-90 blowout win that pushes the Celtics to 3-0 going in to their meeting with New Orleans on Sunday. Paul Pierce had a quiet first half, scoring just two points, but exploded for 20 in the 3rd quarter, and wound up with 22 points on the game. While Pierce was sizzling in that 3rd quarter, it was Rondo who was the player of the game. He only scored 2 points (on only 2 shots), but dished out 16 assists, grabbed 8 rebounds, and controlled the flow of the game from the outset. Through the first three games, the Celts have looked pretty damn unstoppable, and are making good on their goal to be the best defensive team in NBA history. Post game pressers:
What we learned: - The Celtics need to re-sign Rondo, and now. I don't care that he can't shoot. He is the perfect quarterback of this team, and is probably, believe it or not, the co-MVP of the team. - I'm not a fan of the 3-point shot, but damn, if the Celts keep shooting it like this, fire away. - Ray Allen played only 23 minutes tonight (see - don't worry about lofty minutes) . - P2 led the starters with 31 minutes - When the House catches fire, the House burn white hot (22 points on 9-13 shooting off the bench) - I thought Lester Hudson liked to shoot. Come on, Lester, put up a shot or two. - Joakim Noah has cracked my top-5 of most annoying NBA players (joining LeBron James, Mike Bibby, Andersen Varejao, and Pau Gasol) - If the Celtics' defense keeps playing like this,it WILL go down as the best defensive team in NBA history Now, the Box Score: | Player | Mins | FGM/A | 3FM/A | FTM/A | OREB | DREB | T-REB | AST | PF | STL | TO | BS | BA | PTS |
