WASHINGTON - SEPTEMBER 19: US President George W. Bush speaks during the Boston Celtics visit to the White House in the East Room at the White House on September 19, 2008 in Washington, DC.

The Celtics made their trip to Capitol Hill today, and were greeted by President Bush:

George W. Bush is a former part-owner of baseball's Texas Rangers (he often jokes that they did not win on his watch), a guy who likes being around sports champions. With the lowest ratings of any president in recent history, Bush may also see in sports a path to redemption, a story of comebacks against long odds and dubious critics.

Consider his remarks today to the visiting NBA champion Boston Celtics:

It's amazing how sports works, isn't it? At the beginning of last season, few would have predicted how this season would have ended. After all, the Celtics had finished with the second-worst record in the NBA. And the two-decade championship drought was pretty likely to continue — at least that's what the experts said. There's a lot of experts in life these days. ... Except the owners were determined to win. They said, We're going to bring a winner for our fans.
