Who is 'Danny's guy'? PDF Print E-mail

Tis the season for speculation. And while most of the speculation has focused on who 'Danny's guy' is in the draft (Rubio, Thabeet, Evans), if he indeed does trade up, I'm going to go a different route. Maybe the player Ainge covets isn't even in the draft. Maybe he's a player already in the league. A top-5 player, in fact. A player who is going to be part of that stellar crop of free agents in 2010. Up until recently, I wouldn't have given it much thought, seeing as it appeared that he'd be staying put. But, with money issues and impending free agency looming, I really think that this player can be had. And it wouldn't shock me if this is the player Ainge is going after.

Would there be any objections to seeing this headline on the sports ticker?: The Boston Celtics trade Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo to the Miami Heat for Dwayne Wade and James Jones.

Yes, it sounds crazy at first. But, if, IF, Wade is willing to leave Miami and sign with a team that can contend for a title, why not the Celtics? The Celtics have the ammo to pull off such a deal. And, with the prospects of joining KG, Pierce, Perk, and whomever Ainge can sign in free agency to play PG, would Wade ever find a better situation to walk into? James Jones' contract still has 4 years on it, but we're talking DWade, here. Look at this starting lineup (hypothetically, of course):

PG - Kidd (FA)/Marbury/Pruitt

SG - Wade/House/Giddens

SF - Pierce/Jones/Walker

PF - KG/FA/Powe

C - Perk/FA

Hmmm.....that's not too bad, is it? A team built to win now, and, if Wade would sign an extension, a team with a new centerpiece to build around for the future. Now, there would still need to be some holes that need to be filled (namely at the backup 4 and 5 spots). But, if the trade were to happen, then what free agent wouldn't want to come to Boston? Obviously there are cash restrictions and whatnot that would limit the type of free agents that the Celts could sign. But, a starting five that strong would alleviate the need to go balls out in free agency for marquee players.

With all that being said, I give this about 10,000/1 odds of happening. But, as Lloyd Christmas said in 'Dumb and Dumber' - "So you're telling me there's a chance."
